The goods can be packed before transportation and arranged inside the storage area in an organised manner. An inventory or box numbering system can also be useful when several items are being stored together.

The storage process normally starts by understanding the type and approximate quantity of goods. This helps in planning packing material, manpower, transportation and the amount of storage space required.

On the scheduled day, the items are packed according to their nature. Furniture may be dismantled where necessary, while fragile items receive additional cushioning.

After packing, boxes and larger items can be labelled or numbered for easier identification. The goods are then loaded into a suitable vehicle and transported to the storage facility.

At the warehouse, items are unloaded and arranged according to their size, weight and handling requirements.

Small storage requirements may be handled using a compact commercial vehicle, while the contents of a complete home or office may require a larger truck.

Vehicle capacity can be estimated using the approximate CFT volume of the goods. Choosing a suitable vehicle helps avoid unnecessary multiple trips and gives enough space to arrange packed items safely.

During loading, heavier furniture and boxes should generally be placed securely, while fragile and lighter items need suitable positioning to avoid unnecessary pressure.

A covered vehicle is useful for protecting packed goods from dust and weather during transportation to and from the warehouse.

Items should be clean and dry before packing, particularly furniture, clothes and appliances. Storing damp goods for a long period can cause unpleasant odour or damage.

Fragile items should be packed separately and clearly marked. Heavy boxes should not be placed on top of delicate goods.

An inventory of stored items is useful, especially for larger household and office storage requirements. Box numbers can also be matched with an inventory list so that individual items are easier to identify.

Important documents, jewellery, cash, medicines and highly valuable personal belongings are generally better kept separately instead of placing them with regular household storage.
